Zynga Levels Up

Social gaming gargantuan Zynga sets it’s IPO date for mid-December. Is this a historical “inflection point” representing the peak for the social gaming industry? Or is it just another step by Zynga towards world online gaming domination? Articles and analysis by:

Reuters Canada ” The IPO is expected to value the fast growing social gaming company at around $10bn, below some earlier estimates of as much as $20bn.”

New York Times ” In the first nine months of the year, the company notched $828.9 million in revenue, more than double the period a year earlier. It’s also profitable, earning $121 million since the start of 2010.”

Games.com “Zynga will reportedly ask between $8 and $10 a share on the Nasdaq under the ticker ZNGA–a fairly noticeable one, no?”

Sony modifies Playstation Home to provide a social gaming experience with free-to-play games. Will “Home” become a destination for online gamers? Articles and analysis from:

VentureBeat ” Home is evolving to become more of a platform for playing social games. The 230 titles available on Home are aimed at Home’s mostly hardcore fans, but they are lighter and more casual experiences than users would find in disk-based PlayStation 3 games. “

EA Emerges as a Serious Player in Social Games

With the Sims Social, EA has a runaway megahit game and is clearly becoming a dominant force in the industry, second only to Zynga.  Articles and analysis of EA from:

InvestorGuide.com ” The company’s social games also include venerable franchises such as Bejeweled’ and Plants vs. Zombies’. Electronic Arts has a total of 72.3 million registered social gaming users across the Internet, which is still a third of market leader Zynga’s 275.4 million users, but EA’s gains have definitely caught the market’s attention. “

Montreal Gazette ” Chief Executive John Riccitiello told Reuters in an interview his company survived a “near-death experience,” three years ago when its profit shrank, game quality was poor and it lacked an Internet presence.

CNBC (includes video) Riccitiello said the Electronic Arts is now “aggressively” closing the gap between it and social gaming company Zynga thanks the release of its new Facebook game “The Sims Social.” He said the game is now number two in the social gaming space.
