Marvelous Team Up: RockYou meets Playdemic

RockYou has pivoted from focusing on social apps to developing social games. Their acquisition of Manchester based Playdemic gives them more firepower going into battle against the heavyweights like Zynga, EA and Disney in 2011. Articles and analysis from:

Gamasutra ” Though RockYou will add Playdemic’s 16 employees to its team, the Manchester studio will continue to operate independently (as “Playdemic, a RockYou Studio”) and create original games for the parent company.”

Mashable ” It seems strange to us that a 16-person company has only produced one game with only half a million users, but this acquisition seems motivated by the company’s need to churn out new games. Playdemic must create social gaming hits for its parent company if RockYou is to survive.”

Inside Social Games ” While RockYou was at the fore of social app development over the past decade, and still has large non-gaming apps like Birthday Cards (which lets you play Zoo World inside of it) and Pieces of Flair, it has been passed in size and revenue by Zynga, Playdom, Playfish and other developers over the last couple of years.”
